It’s been a while since I have reviewed products, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been splurging on them. I figured it’s about time I shared my discoveries for the greater good, so my first review is for Estee Lauder Double Wear Lipstick. Double Wear Lipsticks have already been reviewed by Rati previously on IMBB, so think of this review as an addendum to that one.
For those who missed it, ELDWLs promise 12 hours of staying power in 13 gorgeous shades. Most of which actually are available in stores in India. The testers are all there, so if any shade happens to be out of stock, just place a request, no problem.
I stumbled upon ELDWLs quite by accident. I set off one day to find a coral lipstick to add to my collection, location, the Palladium Mall. The first stop was Chanel. Despite being a MAC loyalist to the core, I find Chanel lipsticks absolutely dreamy, their rouge allure formulation is to die for and is like liquid silk! Their shades unfortunately tend to lean towards the “flattering for white people” category. The corals here were mildly shimmery or sheer or just not working for me. So, I walked right out of Chanel and right into MAC.
The go to coral at MAC is Crosswires, but again it left my skin looking slightly dull. The MUA tried another shade called See Sheer, which I will say was absolutely awesome on my face. The big BUT here was that I really wanted to stay from MACs Lustre finishes. They are not long lasting enough to see me through even half a day at the office. I figured I’d look around elsewhere and then maybe get See Sheer with Back to MAC.
So, I wandered in to Estee Lauder right next door. I tried on a few lipsticks. Some looked better on my mother than me, she is incredibly fair unlike me. The problem with corals on my skin was that they had a tendency to wash me out completely. Then, I tried on Stay Coral and BINGO !!! This one gave my face instant brightness ! The shade is a beautiful bright true coral, but I warn you, its bright, but because its a matte finish, it doesn’t look OTT. The other thing is that after months of using this shade, I’ve learnt there is a technique to wearing this lipstick, but more on that later.
This is the shade with Flash. Here, it looks more pink than orange. This is a tricky looking color in that respect.
So, I tried on the shade twice before I purchased it. Yes, its expensive. Yes, its totally worth the price!
Swatches of the lipstick with and without flash . The Pink/Purple nail paint is a good contrast shade to help show you how Coral the shade really is.
The staying power of the lipstick is a good six hours as is and from there on fades slowly, but even after 10 hours there is a tint on your lips. The more lipstick in one application, the worse the staying power of the lipstick. With ELDWLs, less is MORE ! The technique to wearing this formula is to do one application in one swipe and then blot to give you a beautiful matte finish. The product will settle into the lines of your lips if you do not blot.
If you go on layering this lipstick, it will start going on uneven. This is also an incredibly drying formula, no really!! If you love your super smooth moisturised lips, then maybe, this isn’t the best lipstick for you. I wear a lip balm below this lipstick, sometimes, but that does reduce the staying power of the lipstick. You can wear a gloss over the lipstick which makes it look prettier, softens the harshness, but again that does reduce the staying power as well.
The next complication is the shade in itself. Since, it is such a bright shade, it simply cannot be worn carelessly. It probably never will be your go-to shade. It requires a little bit of planning and coordination to work best. Personally, wearing this means simple eye make up, natural blush and block colored (darker shades) clothes. This is not a shade I would wear with my bright red kurta, but its one I would ALWAYS wear with my LBD. The shade is a very young color, its a fun shade to wear in your 20s in my opinion, the older you are, the more thought you would have to put into a shade like this. I do wear this shade to the office and like I said, blotting manages to tame this shade into submission 😀
Personally, I am loving every minute of my purchase. Its suits my requirements. Its a fun color, not nearly as maligned as bright reds in India. It lasts long enough to see me through the day although a touch up is needed after lunch, but that’s alright really 😀 Do give these babies a look the next time you happen to pass by an EL counter, but don’t make a trip across town just to see them.
