Korean Double Cleanse Technique

Hi IMBBians,

Korean women are known to have flawless skin, thanks to their exhaustive, but effective skin care regimen. The double cleansing method is paramount to Koreans, even if they are not wearing a full face of makeup. Most of us are used to simply taking a wet wipe, and removing all our makeup in a single step. Although this method is effective to an extent, it does not provide deep cleaning.

Korean Double Cleanse Technique

What is the purpose of this religiously followed technique? Read on to know more about this simple skincare step.

The technique has two steps – oil based cleansing and water based cleansing. It has to be carried out as the cleansing step in the CTM routine. The two steps revolve around two products – primarily, a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm as well as a foaming cleanser. The cleansing oil is supposed to remove all face makeup and any dirt sitting on the surface of the skin. It enables the removal of products that contain oily or waxy elements, commonly found in makeup products and sunscreen. It also helps in the removal of any sebum present on the surface of the skin. A cleansing oil must be thin in consistency to avoid excessive tugging of the skin, and the Innisfree Apple Juicy Cleansing Oil is a good option.

The next step, the cleansing foam, on the other hand, is designed to wash off any residual makeup and cleansing oil, to leave the skin feeling squeaky clean. A cleansing foam is water-based, and will thus remove water-based products additionally. The tiny bubbles of the foam penetrate into our pores and bring any dirt, sebum, bacteria and remaining makeup to the surface and wash out everything. There are many effective cleansing foams, such as the Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, that deeply, but gently removes residue.

The double cleanse is designed in such a way because, we apply our skincare, sun block and makeup in separate multi-steps. Therefore, all of it, including the dirt and grime that has accumulated on the surface of the skin, must be removed sequentially in steps. The idea is to spend quite some time on cleansing, as a huge amount of time is spent in putting on beauty and makeup products. This is the reason why Koreans pay a lot of attention to this step. The double cleanse method is adopted more for the evening skincare routine, and less frequently for the morning.

If all of the dirt, pollutants, sun block and makeup is still present on the skin, all other products applied over them such as toner, serum and moisturizer will simply lock it in, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Moreover, the actions of the serums and toners will be nullified as they will not be able to work and provide nourishment to the skin.

For more persistent and water-proof makeup, a point makeup remover like the The Face Shop Herb Day Lip & Eye Makeup Remover or efficient wipes like the Neutrogena Deep Clean Makeup Remover Facial Wipes may be used prior to the double cleansing routine.

Another benefit of this step is that applying the cleansing oil and cleanser is like doing a facial massage. Care must be taken while selecting products as there should be minimum tugging of the skin and harsh chemicals must be avoided.
