You see, I have a major problem with most lip products and it’s their staying power. Whether it’s lip gloss or lipstick, it fades away within an hour-and-a-half.  This could be because I drink a lot of water and sweat a lot. It’s still frustrating because the only time I seem to have anything on my lips is at home or while travelling.  When I’ve finally reached the party or event, I’m bare-lipped once again. Now, I know a lot of you don’t mind and even enjoy re-applying your lip products, but I don’t.

See, I’m a college student and use a lot of public transport on a day-to-day basis. So, I’m on a bus or train for a large part of the day. I don’t mind touching-up in trains so much because at least I’m travelling in the ladies compartment, but on a bus, it’s a whole different story. It’s next to impossible to do touch-ups without all the men staring intently at you as though you’re half-naked or something. I just HATE it. When I absolutely must touch-up on a bus, I literally bury my head in my bag and then do it. This makes the whole act of touching up so awkward and unpleasant. I almost gave up on lip products.

One day, it suddenly struck me that I could try out one of the tinted lip balms that were getting such rave reviews everywhere. I figured, even though the staying power isn’t great, it’d be easier to touch-up a lip balm than a lipstick or gloss. People would assume that I was just using a chap stick and not putting on makeup.

Nivea lip balm

So, that’s how I ended up buying the Nivea lip balms. I bought the cherry one along with Pink Guava and Pomegranate. I absolutely love the Pomegranate flavor. It smells delicious and the tint looks so good, especially on pigmented lips. Pink Guava is my second favourite. The Cherry one is my least favorite. It’s not as pigmented as the Pomegranate one and you have to swipe it furiously on your lips to get some color. This is especially true on more pigmented lips. Of course, if you don’t want much color and just a hint of it, then you won’t really mind, but for me, these lip balms are an alternative to lipstick or gloss.

Tip:

If you’re like me and want as much color as possible then, swipe the sides of the balm stick on your lips. The color tends to show up just a bit more because the sides are more melted or bruised than the top. You could even bruise the top yourself for a bit more color. Beware, that doing this can make the whole tube messier.

When it comes to the moisturizing capabilities, this balm works quite well. It keeps the lips very moist and supple. I don’t think it’ll work magic on extremely chapped lips, but then few lip balms can do that. I personally think that lip balms don’t do much more than just soften the lips, so that the chapped skin can peel off easily. Just rubbing a wet towel on your lips to slightly peel off the skin and then piling on any cheap waxy lip balm will do the trick.

Lip balm

After swiping it on my arm like a hundred times!

Pros of Nivea Fruity Shine Lip Balm in Cherry:

  • Delicious scent.
  • Keeps lips moist and slightly glossy.
  • Good alternative to a lip gloss.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Very subtle tint (good for those of you with pale lips or those who prefer just a hint of color).
  • Good lip balm for everyday use.

Cons of Nivea Fruity Shine Lip Balm in Cherry:

  • Color payoff not as good as the Pomegranate one (may not be a con if you like a lighter tint).
  • May seem almost transparent on pigmented lips.

Rating:

4/5 (one point deducted because I prefer a bit more color).

Conclusion:

This is probably the least pigmented of the Nivea fruity shine lip balms. If you don’t mind just a hint of color and like a cherry scent in your lip balm, then go for it. If you’re like me and want just a bit more color, then go for the Pomegranate one. It looks best on more pigmented lips. This one is more suited for paler lips.
