Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss

Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss

Hi IMBB Gang, a time long back, when I used to watch “Friends” daily and wish that my lips had the glossily natural look that Rachel had and my addiction with lip gloss started with a Streetwear nude shade that I got as a gift sometime back in 2005.  After that, I started collecting as many glosses as possible, but then, I couldn’t find many because back then Lotus hadn’t yet brought out their lip glosses, Maybelline was just expanding their line and Loreal looked too expensive (I was not yet the makeup addict that I am now, so then spending 600-700 on a makeup product looked weird).

That was when one of my friends lend me her Neutrogena lip gloss for a quick touch-up and I fell in love with it. It was an MLBB shade and stayed so long and made my lips look so good.  Back then, I hadn’t heard about this brand and Neutrogena had not yet come to Indian markets. So, that was the first time I turned to internet to check on a makeup product and see if I could buy it online. Amazon did not ship this and drugstore didn’t have international shipping at that time and ebay was not familiar to me.  So, I nagged all my friends who went abroad to get me one when they came back to India.

Since most of them were guys, I had to do a lot of explanation including the difference between a lip gloss and a lip balm. The end result was that I got 5 items, 1 lipstick, 2 lip balms (yeah, guys don’t understand the difference!), and 2 lip glosses.  The sad part was that both of them turned out to be similar shades and since I ordered shades online, the ones I got had a different color.

Whew, story over; if you understood anything from the long yarn; I was waiting so much for these and I was a bit disappointed over what I got and that you should preferably not ask guys to buy makeup stuff for you (not a generalization, I said preferably, of course guys who know coral is a shade and not something related to oceans exist!!)- then I got my message across.

Now, for the review of these beauties.

Before IMBB, I was not aware of a good review site that helped us Indian gals on makeup issues. I knew of a particular site, but since most of the reviewers were from US/UK, I couldn’t rely on their reviews, but still, based on my personal experience that the gloss was of good quality and the general belief that pink should be good enough for any skin, I ordered two shades – Razzle and Flirt. Now, these have been discontinued in their 2011 catalogue and replaced by more coral/peach shades which is the trend now.

Lip gloss

From the company website about the gloss:

My Experience with Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss:

Okay, maybe, it is just me, but I somehow don’t like too much of glitter in my gloss. So, I like Flirt more than I like Razzle.

Flirt:

Swatch

This is a nicely pigmented, deep berry-colored gloss with slight pink/fuschia undertones. I love how it looks on my lips. My lips are very pigmented and this looks like a MLBB shade and gives a nice glossy finish without looking over the top.  It does not have any glitter and looks very creamy when applied on the lips. Now, this is my personal liking, but some of my friends, especially the ones with naturally pink-ish lips didn’t like this one, because it looked very clownish (yes…that’s the exact word that my friend used) on them as it came off very bright on naturally light and pink-ish lips. So, I think this one is for all dusky beauties like me (ahem) with pigmented lips.

Razzle:

swatches

Surprisingly, this looks much prettier in the tube and in pictures than on my lips. Again, this is because I don’t like too much glitter and bright pink makes me look very dark. This is a Barbie-pink color with lots of shimmer (not chunky though) in it and surprisingly doesn’t turn sheer, but retains the color when applied on lips. Again, on my friend’s lip (naturally pinky lips, lucky gal), this looks a very pretty color, with subtle coral tones and the shimmer looks natural. So, this is not for dark beauties, but I guess for fair damsels, this can help in creating a nice pretty innocent ook for the summer.

Summing up the pros and cons of Flirt:

Pros of Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss

  • Creamy berry color that looks very pretty on my lips.
  • Moisturizing (I don’t need a lip balm) and not very sticky and doesn’t dry my lips.
  • Super smooth wand applicator.
  • Single swipe gives enough color for day wear and for a natural look.
  • Price and packaging are okay.
  • Dermatologically tested.

Cons of Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss

  • It does not taste sweet and does not have any strong fragrance, but it has a slight chemical flavor, which I personally don’t like. It is not very strong, so it should be okay with most people.
  • It does not last very long, 2-3 hours maximum if I don’t eat anything, but then, they don’t claim it’s long stay, so I guess I cannot really complain.
  • I really wish that they gave more quantity, it got over very fast (within 1-2months) even though I was using only 1-2 swipes per day.
  • Contains parabens.
  • Neutrogena is part of J&J group which does animal testing.

Razzle:

Pros:

  • Pretty pink color that will look naturally coral pink on fair skin.
  • Moisturizing and not very sticky.
  • Super smooth wand applicator.
  • Price and packaging are okay.

Cons:

  • Too much glitter.
  • Less pigmented than Flirt.

Rating:

4 for Flirt (1 point deducted for short staying power and chemical smell and parabens) and 3.5 for Razzle (additional 0.5 deducted for too much shimmer).

Will I Buy Again?

Hmmm, no, because I am totally against testing on animals and secondly because I am now in love with Lotus botanical gloss, and thirdly because now, I am more of a lipstick person than a gloss person. Also, this works as more of a tinted lip balm than a long stay lip gloss, so I wouldn’t buy this for my gloss needs.

  1. LOL @ your friends-from-abroad story! I can so expect my friends to do similar foolishness and not even understand that they’d made a mistake. :silly:
Great review. I’m not touching this product even with a 10-foot bargepole. I hate it when companies test on animals. :reallyangry: It makes me pretty glad that I’ve never really tried a Neutrogena product ever.
